Gray Elementary School celebrated Wellness Day on March 1. Gerome Wiltz, physical education teacher at the campus, organized the event in which students from every grade participated. Students visited a variety of wellness stations with topics ranging from fitness, healthy diet and emotional well-being. To ensure they experienced a variety of wellness activities, the students rotated every 10 to 15 minutes from one station to another.
The students really enjoyed the station with Sensei Dordy from the Northside Karate School. He talked to students about self-discipline and taking care of the mind as well as the body. Dordy had students practice some simple karate exercises and demonstrated more advanced ones. Everyone was amazed when Sensei Dordy demonstrated how he could break a wood board with a single chop of his hand.
While at the healthy eating station, students received a delicious treat from Rodney Goods, music teacher at Gray Elementary. He discussed the benefits of eating fresh, healthy foods. He also demonstrated how to make a tasty fruit and vegetable smoothie and provided each with a sample of his delectable concoction.
At another station, nurse Donnie Jackson of Ben Taub Hospital talked to students about the effects of a bad diet and unhealthy habits that can lead to heart disease, lung disease, and juvenile diabetes.
Coach Wiltz headed the physical fitness station where students participated in various activities such as running, stretching, soccer drills, and relay races.
And the anger management station, students learned the right and wrong ways to deal with anger.
Students learned many things at wellness day. But the biggest lesson of the day was that keeping a healthy mind and body is good for everyone!
