MacArthur High Teacher Receives Fund for Teachers Grant

Patricia Ego of MacArthur High School received a $5,000 award from Fund for Teachers. The award will finance a trip for Ego to attend an 18-day modeling workshop in New York City this summer. Modeling workshops offer an introduction to the Modeling Instruction Program, a highly acclaimed interactive approach to teaching science. This workshop is specifically about physics modeling, which is a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) initiative that teaches students how to become logical thinkers and better problem solvers.

Ego, who seen in the image above with several of her students working on a science experiment, will learn methodologies that facilitate developing students’ abilities to make sense of physical experiences, understand scientific claims as well as articulate and defend coherent opinions of their own with effective arguments. The workshop will be held at Teacher’s College, which is part of Columbia University. The workshop, which is being hosted by Physics Teachers of New York City, will run from July 22 to August 9.

Fund for Teachers (FFT) grants offer teachers the opportunity to self-design summer fellowship experiences around the learning needs of their unique student and school populations, and ultimately aim to enhance the skills necessary to address those needs. Individual teachers are awarded up to $5,000 and teams of two or more teachers are awarded up to $10,000.

Teachers self-design research-based projects and submit proposals that detail how a FFT Fellowship would support their quests to become better teachers. Applicants explain how they plan to transfer their improved skills to the classroom, their colleagues, and their school communities. A panel of foundation, corporate, and community leaders evaluates these proposals and selects those likely to result in the greatest impact.
