Kids’ Day at HP Robotics Contest, Stehlik Intermediate Students Win 2nd Place

Stehlik Intermediate School students participated recently in Kids’ Day at HP. The students’ hard work paid off. The team won second place.

Teams of elementary and middle school students from 14 area schools tested their ingenuity, creativity and skill.

The annual event is funded by Harris County Department of Education’s Cooperative for After-School Enrichment (CASE) and is supported by Hewlett-Packard. Engineers from HP design the course and help train the students. HP also dedicates staff and facilities to host the event.

Students prepared for the competition for several weeks. They had to design, build, test and program robots using Lego Mindstorms® kits.

Competitive judging is based on teams’ success within two distinct categories: robotics maneuvering and marketing the robotic product.

Overall Winners
1st Place (tie) — Kruse Elementary School, (Pasadena ISD) & Roberts Road Elementary School (Waller ISD)
2nd Place — Stehlik Intermediate School (Aldine ISD)
3rd Place — Southwest Elementary School (Charter)

Christi van Wassenhove, principal at the campus, praises the program.

“Kids’ Day helps open students’ minds to the many ways technology can be used,” said van Wassenhove. “And it does this in a fun, friendly competitive manner. Kids’ Day at HP provides a spark that inspires the students to pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) careers.”
