Aldine ISD PK-2 Grade Students Get Ready to Kickoff Jumpstart’s Read for the Record on Oct. 21

Aldine ISD students in prekindergarten (PK) through second grade will take part in [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Read for the Record Oct. 21. The students will join millions of children and adults in Jumpstart’s national campaign.

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record shines a spotlight on the importance of early education. It also focuses on reading to children at an early age. Jumpstart is not the only organization that supports early reading. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also recommends early literacy development. The [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]AAP advises parents to read aloud regularly to their children from an early age. Reading aloud could help close the achievement gap between children from different socioeconomic groups.

According to Jumpstart’s website, the annual event is the world’s largest shared reading experience. In 2013, Jumpstart broke the world record. More than 2.4 million people from around the world participated in Read for the Record.

Cindy Buchanan stated that the book chosen for the 2014 event is “Bunny Cakes.” The book is written by best-selling author and illustrator Rosemary Wells. Buchanan is the district program director of library media services.

“This is a fun book for our young readers,” said Buchanan. “The interaction between the siblings, Max and Ruby, is classic. There is loads of laughter to keep students engaged. And the illustrations are wonderful.”

Buchanan is a strong supporter of the event.

“Instilling a love of reading in young children is so important,” said Buchanan. “Reading helps students develop language and literacy skills. These are skills that are necessary to be ready for school. Research shows a strong connection between reading and academic success.”

Buchanan added that information literacy specialists (librarians) have developed activities to make the event fun for students.

“Information literacy specialists have completed or have activities planned leading up to the event,” said Buchanan. “Some ILSs have read the book to students. Others have had students write simple stories. One campus had students make a simple dish like pudding,” said Buchanan. “The idea is to make reading fun and exciting for everyone. The culminating event of all these activities will be when everyone from prekindergarten to second grade participates in Read for the Record on Tuesday, October 21.”

Buchanan invites parents and community members to take part in Read for the Record. Parents can stop by their child’s campus while community and business partners can visit any local school. Buchanan added that parents can support the event by reading [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]”Bunny Cakes” to their children at home.
