Annual District Spelling Bee Set for February 6

A total of 52 students will face off as they vie for a chance to head to Houston Public Media Spelling Bee.

After months of preparation and several rounds of competitions at the campuses, 52 Campus Spelling Bee Champions representing schools across the District will face off at the AISD Spelling Bee, which is set for February 6 from 4-7 p.m. at the M.O. Campbell Educational Center, located at 1865 Aldine Bender Rd. Each one is competing for a chance to advance to the Houston Public Media Spelling Bee.

Since September, AISD students at elementary and middle school campuses taking part in the Spelling Bee have been studying more than 1,150 words from 12 languages of origin. The words come from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary and the Scripps National Spelling Bee study site.

Margaux P. Jones, program director of elementary languages arts, states there are many good reasons for students to take part in spelling bees. According to Jones, the purpose of the program is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.

Spelling is a key to understanding. Using correct spelling and grammar ensures that people understand what you want them to understand.

Jones encourages students’ classmates, parents, staff and community members to come out and support the spellers. Jones is the District Spelling Bee coordinator.

“It would be wonderful to have everyone come out and support our competitors who have worked so hard to reach the district competition,” said Jones. “The students need to hear the community cheering them on.”

The District Champion and Runner-Up will advance to the Houston Public Media Spelling Bee. The regional contest is set to take place March 23, 2019. The winner of the Houston Public Media Spelling Bee will advance to take part in the National Scripps Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

More than 11 million students participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee each year.
