Our Why

Aldine ISD is pushing forward with efforts to increase the number of community educators of color working in schools through a community-based grow-your-own program. Chief of Staff Sheleah D. Reed said the actions form part of the district’s equity work. Aldine ISD’s student of color growth is outpacing the need for highly-qualified community teachers of color. In a field dominated by women, AISD also seeks to increase male teachers of color, which is a focus of CTED’s recruitment efforts this spring.

The district has partnered with the University of Houston College of Education in the Community Teacher Equity Development (CTED) program to advance its equity goals. The mission is to dismantle inequitable barriers that limit marginalized and minoritized groups’ access to teacher education programs by creating pathways that support their ability to become teachers in K-12 classrooms. CTED also has partnerships with Alief and Houston school districts.

“This is a bold effort as we move forward,” said Reed. “We’re excited about the Community Teacher Equity Development Program. We know that students of color reach better outcomes when taught by teachers of color. Students have better academic performance, improved graduation rates, and are more likely to attend college. This work is about fulfilling the priorities and goals of our strategic plan. All of our students must have access to high-quality schools and learning experiences that prepare them for their futures. All Aldine ISD students will graduate with choices and opportunities.”

CTED focuses on developing high-quality teachers to diminish educational inequity for all students. The goal is to advance equity in teacher development and school systems by nurturing culturally responsive, equity-focused educators who:

  • Effectively teach and reach K12 students.
  • Engage and partner with parents.
  • Invest in local school communities.
  • Remain in the profession.

How All Students Benefit

  • Students tend to be inspired by role models they can relate to in the classroom.
  • Student engagement increases when they are taught in culturally and linguistically responsive ways. Students thrive socially, emotionally, and academically when they have strong relationships with their teachers.
  • Students benefit from teachers who set high expectations.

Community Teacher Equity Development (CTED) Program is Now Recruiting

CTED is committed to dismantling inequity in teacher development and school systems through supporting the academic and professional advancement of ethnoracially, culturally, and linguistically diverse educators.

Who Should Apply to the Aldine ISD CTED Program?

Community members, paraeducators, parents, substitute teachers, and school-certified staff interested in becoming teachers should apply. African American men are strongly encouraged to apply. They should:

  • Be committed to educational justice.
  • Have a 2.5 GPA
