Aldine ISD’s Prop C in its Bond 2023 Election Calls for Voters to Consider Construction of an Education and Performing Arts Center

For years, the community, students, and staff active and supportive of the visual and performing arts have asked for a center with the core purpose of serving our students.

The center was among the discussion items in Bond 2015 but was set aside for more critical projects at the time. The 58-member Long-Range Planning Committee again brought it to the Board, which agreed to include the center’s construction as Prop C in Bond 2023.

“The Long-Range Planning Committee asked us to explore opportunities with the potential to benefit our students,” said Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney. “We are thankful for the support and vision from the LRPC. We share the same goal of an expanded and thriving arts community in Aldine ISD. If voters approve Prop C on November 7, we look forward to helping shape that future through increased opportunities for students in the fine arts.”

The performing and visual arts programs continue to grow in Aldine ISD, not just in enrollment but also in new performance, evaluation, and contest opportunities for all our students. The arts programs impact about 50,000 K-12 students.

Current district facilities cannot accommodate the overall needs. Scheduling conflicts sometimes push performances to venues that take away from performances. An example of this is the M.O. Campbell Educational Center (MOC). The MOC is designed for sports, not performing events (echoes take away from performances). The MOC also has limited availability, and the growing fine arts program events have outgrown the MOC. A state-of-the-art performance venue would provide our students with a dedicated facility to maximize student learning and the performance experience for performers and guests.

Prop C, totaling $122,282,967, would provide a state-of-the-art performance center with multiple theaters to accommodate fine arts programming. The fine arts facility described to voters includes an auditorium and spaces for a gallery and instructional training.

• The facility would more than double the size of many current school auditoriums.
• Expanded future-ready learning and student opportunities
• Expanded collaborative performances between fine arts disciplines, campuses, and grade levels.
• Maximized student instructional time by hosting student events at the fine arts facility that generally occur during the school day
• Use of the facility, with the potential for outside groups and/or partners to utilize the facility.
• Future UIL hosting and evaluative competitive events.

“As a Board, we look forward to fulfilling the promise of expanding artistic opportunities for our students and teachers,” said Board President Randy Bates Jr. “The center would be an investment in the arts that will ripple throughout our community for generations.”
