Preseason Look: Davis High School Basketball Teams Enter 2025 Season Focused on Growth and Identity

The Davis High School boys’ and girls’ basketball programs enter the 2025 season with new energy, new challenges, and a shared commitment to rebuilding toward long-term success. While the boys begin the year 0–5 and the girls 2–8, both squads are laying foundations they believe will pay off as district play approaches.

Falcons Boys’ Basketball: A Young Team Growing Through the Process

The Davis Falcons boys’ basketball program is currently in a rebuilding phase, consisting of a roster filled with young players and no returning varsity members from last year’s 11–21 team. Head Coach Christopher Packer mentioned that the team is adopting a “work in progress” mindset as it faces challenges early in the season.

“This team is learning what it takes to practice hard,” Packer said. “Leaders on the court have to be the hardest workers to earn that title, and this bunch is working to get to that point — but they are progressing every day.”

The Falcons are relying on the emerging leadership and playmaking skills of their frontcourt players, Travell Johnson and Josiah Franklin, along with guard Michael Dulaney, to help guide the team through its developmental challenges. Coach Packer’s tough-love approach and rigorous practices have established a high standard for effort and accountability as his young roster adapts to varsity competition.

He noted the season has featured plenty of teaching moments, with an emphasis on developing consistent habits that began in offseason workouts and continue to shape the program’s culture.

When discussing the team’s goals, Packer keeps it simple: “We want to improve every day and win on and off the court. Every game is the same — we want to go 1–0 and respect every opponent.”

Packer, who has previously led four Davis squads to the playoffs, remains confident that the Falcons can return to that standard. “We’ve had success during my tenure, and I’m looking forward to rebuilding and getting back to that level. It starts with developing good habits and bringing energy.”

The Davis boys will look to take their next step on Dec. 16 against Lake Creek at 7 p.m. at Lake Creek High School. 

Lady Falcons Basketball: Chemistry, Toughness, and a New Mindset

In year two under Head Coach Justin Long, the Lady Falcons enter the season with a renewed sense of unity and determination. After a challenging 7–20 campaign marked by communication struggles, Long says this team has grown significantly — both on and off the court.

“Everyone sees eye to eye,” Long said. “Because of this chemistry improvement, the team is clicking on all cylinders. The unity this team has makes them special. The girls are close on and off the court.”

The Lady Falcons have experienced a shift in mindset, largely driven by guards Avery Williams and Kimani Ferguson. These players have stepped up as vocal leaders, encouraging the team to reach higher standards. Their leadership has played a crucial role in transforming the Lady Falcons into a tougher and more disciplined unit.

This toughness didn’t appear overnight. Long credits the team’s commitment in the weight room this offseason, as well as daily focus on fundamentals and reducing turnovers by improving ball-handling.

“Our goal is to be detailed and disciplined in everything we do,” Long said.

The Lady Falcons embrace their team motto — “Davis vs. Everybody” — as they prepare for a competitive district season. Long said the team is ready to compete every day and represent their campus with pride.

The Lady Falcons return to action on Dec. 16 at 5:30 p.m. against Eisenhower at Davis High School.

Both Davis programs enter the season with different challenges but a shared belief in growth, discipline, and representing their community with heart. As the season progresses, the Falcons — boys and girls — are committed to building something lasting for Davis High School.
