Workshop on U.S. Program to Suspend Deportation of Young Undocumented Immigrants Scheduled in Houston

State Representatives Ana Hernández Luna and Armando Walle will host a workshop about the U.S. program to suspend deportation of young undocumented immigrants known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). The workshop is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. until noon at the University of Houston-Downtown (located near the intersection of San Jacinto and Steam Mill Road).

The workshop will only serve 100 people on a first-come, first-served basis.

Deferred action is a discretionary determination to defer removal action of an individual as an act of prosecutorial discretion. Under this process, U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services will consider requests on a case-by-case basis. While this process does not provide lawful status or a pathway to permanent residence or citizenship, individuals whose cases are deferred will not be removed from the United States for a two-year period, subject to renewal, and may also receive employment authorization.

The purpose of the workshop is to assist individuals with questions concerning their eligibility status, application submittal and to assist individuals who need additional advice. Individuals will have the opportunity to speak with a qualified attorney on an individual basis to assist with additional concerns individuals may have concerning their eligibility.

Individuals who attend the workshop are asked to bring the following documentation and questions with them:

• DACA application (complete or incomplete)
• Proof of identity (photo identification)
• Proof of student status or military status
• Proof individuals came to the United States before their 16th birthday
• Specific questions concerning your case or eligibility for DACA
